Ancient Grains Quinoa

Ancient Grains often called super grains or heritage grains, are still planted and harvested in the same way they were several thousands of years ago. What sets them apart, among many other things, is that they are too small in size to be refined – the process that separates the outer bran from the inner germ. This is why ancient grains are able to keep their original health benefits, vitamins, minerals, fibers, proteins, and antioxidants.
Additionally, most ancient grains are gluten-free, which is very appealing. Here are some popular choices of Ancient Grains that you can easily incorporate into your diet:
  • Chia: This famous seed originated in Mexico and Guatemala. It contains a number of natural antioxidants, it's rich in minerals and fibers, and packed with the omega-3 fatty acid ALA.
  • Amaranth: This tiny grain was very popular with the Aztecs and Incas. It resembles couscous and it is rich in calcium, essential amino acids, and it is considered a complete protein.
  • Quinoa: Very popular with vegetarians, this seed was considered sacred by the Incas. It is packed with protein and it has a lovely nutty flavor.
  • Spelt: This wheat is a great source of protein, carbs, niacin, and iron. It has a sweetand nutty flavor, and it's easily interchangeable with any other wheat.
  • Farro: Also knows as Emmer, it's one of the oldest grains cultivated in the world, and it is the traditional grain of the Mediterranean. It is rich in iron and protein, and it's commonly used in pasta and other Italian dishes.

Compared with modern grains, ancient grains have more protein, are less refined, and most of them are grown organically. People who eat whole ancient grains, generally have lower cholesterol levels, and experience other health benefits too, some of which include:
  • lower risk of diabetes
  • reduced risk of breast and colon cancers
  • lower risk of high blood pressure

Follow in our ancestors’ footsteps and incorporate these whole grain into your diet to reap the health benefits they praised. Because they are denser in protein than other grains, they will also aid your muscle building goals, suppress your cravings and give you a satiety feeling for longer.
